Knowledge Transfer & Exchange

Knowledge transfer and exchange can be loosely described as the process of “bringing research to life”. It involves:

  • Ensuring that relevant research findings and information are accessible for application in practice, policy and program development, and planning
  • Involving individuals and groups who are impacted by an issue in the research process – from developing research questions to shaping the content and context of the findings
  • Engaging in ongoing, two way communication and collaboration with stakeholders
  • Using plain language materials and communication strategies that are easy to understand by different audiences
  • Building capacity for the understanding and use of research evidence to guide decision-making

The following is a sampling of internal and external knowledge transfer and exchange activities at Saint Elizabeth Health Care:

Internal activities

Clinical Support Network
Saint Elizabeth Health Care maintains an extensive network of clinical resource nurses and advanced practice consultants who utilize knowledge transfer and exchange strategies to foster positive work environments and exceptional client care outcomes. Specific activities include:

  • Expanding and supporting staff knowledge, skills and competencies to meet the evolving care needs of clients
  • Implementing and evaluating best practice guidelines
  • Developing and delivering education programs
  • Facilitating and contributing to virtual Communities of Learning
  • Assisting in the application of theory, knowledge and research evidence to practice
  • Participating in community joint visits to facilitate role modeling and skill instruction

Business Intelligence
Saint Elizabeth Health Care is leveraging technology to ensure that every employee has the information and tools they require to make the best decisions possible. Ensuring that information is both accessible and usable by individuals and groups promotes a consistent evidence-based decision making process for managing organizational performance and continuously improving results.

@YourSide Colleague®
Developed by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, @YourSide Colleague® (aYSC) is a secure web-based program that offers 24/7 access to a virtual support network of peers and experts, as well as self-directed learning courses that reflect the latest evidence and best practice. The aYSC team provides numerous supports to SEHC employees and external learners, including demonstration sessions and virtual study groups. Because community health care staff and clients are typically spread out across large geographic areas, the ability to disseminate information quickly and efficiently is a great benefit.

External activities

Care to Know Centre Online
Through an interactive social media web site, the Care to Know Centre will commence an ongoing dialogue with clients, family members and informal caregivers along with health professionals to explore the opportunities and challenges of achieving client and family centred care. Health care is about more than just accessing information; it is about the quality and relevance of that information. We want to know how this information can help you, what is still missing, what does it all mean to you and how can we, collectively, generate new ideas that will change the way care is delivered. What you care to know is what we want to know.

Symposiums
The Care to Know Centre hosts symposiums and knowledge exchange forums featuring leading experts, researchers and thinkers on client and family centred care. The purpose of these events is to investigate models of client and family engagement via knowledge mobilization and translation techniques, and to move knowledge among care partners.

2008 Research Conference, “Forging Ahead…Evidence to Innovation”
In March 2008, Saint Elizabeth Health Care hosted an international research conference, which brought people, knowledge and technology together in order to build a collective wisdom from diverse perspectives. This event celebrated our centennial year and promoted the use of research, evidence, and innovation at the individual, organizational and systems levels of health care.
